Salomon Quest 4D 2 Review
No piece of gear is more important to the outdoor enthusiast than their footwear, which is why we are bringing you this Salomon Quest 4D 2 Review. Often a traditional hiking boot is great in rugged terrain but can be heavy and slow. A more athletic trainer, on the other hand, can give you more speed, but less stability and support.
The Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX Boots are the perfect middle ground, borrowing designs from traditional boots as well as trail runner shoes to give you the best of both worlds. This hybrid boot gives you the toughness for any challenging terrain, but with a lightweight flex that means you can deliver bursts of speed and agility whenever, and wherever you need them.

How and Where Have These Boots Been Tested
Hiking in multiple types of terrain here in Arizona, boots have always been the one piece of gear I am constantly obsessed with. Everything from the low, jagged, desert cliffs to Aspen mountain peaks, I needed a boot that could handle it all. After one full year of using my Salomon boots, they have done exceptionally well in the varying types of terrain as well as the different lengths of hikes they have been on.
Being an active backpacker, these boots have been worn several days on end as well as taken on multiple trips into jagged sheep country that is notorious for slicing open even the toughest of boots. All in all, we have put these boots through as many different tests as we possibly could and the results speak for themselves.
Comfort and Fit
The first thing you will notice about these boots is how comfortable they are. There was no break-in period required for the Salomons, and they were ready to hike in straight out of the box. In my opinion, the most important aspect of any boot purchase is how well they fit my foot. Everybody’s feet are different, and most people will suggest trying on as many boots as possible to find the best fit. I highly suggest trying on a pair of Salomon 4Ds, as they are as comfortable as your favorite pair of sneakers. Wider-footed people should check out the Meindl Burma Pro Boots.
Construction and Build Quality
The Salomon 4D chassis (which gives this boot its name) ensures your footing is stable even on the most unpredictable terrain. The boots are finished with full-grain leather, which gives them more durability and longer wear, while rubber toe and heel caps at the front and back mean that your feet are going to be well protected. The outer also features Gore-Tex that will keep your feet dry, both from the outside elements and sweat from the inside. If you have ever hiked with damp feet, you know how important this is!
Grip and Soles
One of my favorite aspects of these boots has been the grip they provide in the different terrains I am hiking. The Contragrip soles have a reverse chevron tread that grips well on anything, including loose rocks, wet mud, and sand. While these boots have an aggressive tread (which I found very helpful) I have had to get them resoled as they did wear down, although that is to be expected when you put hundreds of miles on any pair of boots. Overall the bottom of the boot is just as well made as the top.
Waterproofing and Breathability
As mentioned before, the Salomon 4D boots feature a full Gore-Tex lining to keep your feet dry. Living in Arizona, waterproofing has never been my highest priority, but I decided to test them by purposely crossing every stream I stumbled upon to see how long they would keep my feet dry. Right off the bat, they kept the water out extremely well, even while standing in a stream for around ten minutes like they were a pair of farm wellies. A full year later they still keep my feet plenty dry in the occasional creek crossings.
More important to me in the heat is how well my boots breathe, and even with the waterproof linings these boots have, my feet have always been plenty cool in the Arizona heat. These boots were designed to provide not only comfort but the ability to adapt to your surroundings. Even in colder weather, a quality pair of socks could take you all the way to later seasons.
Any Other Points?
The biggest reason I decided to try these boots (besides the other great Salomon Quest 4D Reviews online) was the price point. It’s no secret that your boots are one of the most important pieces of gear that you own, but that being said it doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on them. I would consider these boots as high-end footwear at a reasonable price.
Salomon also has a great customer service department, and they were extremely helpful when trying to get my boots resoled. While this may not make or break a buying decision, it is something to consider when making a big purchase such as red hiking boots.
Pros and Cons
Salomon hit a home run with these boots, and overall, we have been very happy running these boots. Here are our pros and cons of the boots:
- Comfortable and flexibility
- No break in period. Ready to hike right out of the box
- Very quiet
- Great customer service/warranty
- Not as durable as a leather hiking boot
- Could be too much boot for an average or newbie hiker
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX men’s hiking boots popular for a reason. They are an excellent lightweight backpacking boot and will fit the bill of most established hikers.
Overall, I think you are getting pretty good value for money as long as you know what to expect out of them. By my estimation, they won’t last beyond a few years hard use, which I think is a decent enough period of use for the price. I stress that’s not a criticism, likely just a fact based on the way they’re constructed, but to get those advantages in terms of weight and so on, they have to be made the way they are. For your average hiker though, I think these boots will last just fine and go above and beyond what is expected.
