How We Test Gear

We test outdoor gear with a simple goal: to understand what it is actually like to use, not just repeat manufacturer specifications.

Where possible, products are tested in the kind of conditions they are designed for, including camping trips, hikes, wet weather, cold conditions, travel, and everyday outdoor use.

When comparing products, we look at things such as build quality, comfort, weight, usability, durability, design, value for money, and any weaknesses that become obvious during use.

Some products are tested side by side, while others are used over longer periods. We also revisit older guides when products change, models are discontinued, or better alternatives become available.

Our recommendations are based on practical experience and testing. Affiliate commissions may be earned from some links, but they do not determine which products are recommended or how they are ranked.

We try to be clear about the strengths and weaknesses of every product, because the best option often depends on how and where it will actually be used.
